The Luckiest Man
Words and Music - Pete Morton

I first saw her face back in ‘45,
with her lovely black hair and her sparkling eyes,
The fighting was over and we danced to the band
My heart skipped a beat as I held her hand.

I worked at the plumbers in Saxby Street,
I was just the apprentice finding his feet,
I work at my trade and I worked hard and late,
But living for Fridays to walk to her gate,

She’s my best friend, she’s my companion,
For me and the kids she does all she can,
Though the struggles have come, she’s stood beside me
She makes me feel like the luckiest man,
She makes me feel like the luckiest man.

I asked her to marry me one summers eve
As we sat in the park ‘neath the big oak trees,
We skimped and we saved, and soon settled down
Found us a house on the house skirts of town.

She’s my best friend, she’s my companion,
For me and the kids she does all she can,
Though the struggles have come, she’s stood beside me
She makes me feel like the luckiest man,
She makes me feel like the luckiest man.

In the old house in Wigston my first son was born
How I worked on the site with a permanent yawn,
No rest to be found only acres of joys
They’re a law to themselves, these girls and boys.

She’s my best friend, she’s my companion,
For me and the kids she does all she can,
Though the struggles have come, she’s stood beside me
She makes me feel like the luckiest man,
She makes me feel like the luckiest man.

The children come home to visit their mum
I mix up their names, she remembers each one,
And she’s got a pride and her eyes let it show
I got a pride that no riches can know.

She’s my best friend, she’s my companion,
For me and the kids she does all she can,
Though the struggles have come, she’s stood beside me
She makes me feel like the luckiest man,
She makes me feel like the luckiest man.

We sit here together and I take a good look,
while she’s watching the telly or reading her book
My sweethearts love, carried me through the years,
Over the struggles, the joys and the fears.
She’s my best friend, she’s my companion,
For me and the kids she does all she can,
Though the struggles have come, she’s stood beside me
She makes me feel like the luckiest man,
She makes me feel like the luckiest man.

I first saw her face back in ‘45.
