The Sock On The Line Words and Music - Pete Morton |

Economy simply means well being and it doesn’t mean anything else, I’m dancing on the stars playing my guitar to the cat and the dog and a sock on the line, I was thinking ‘bout the world and where its been and where its going and its spiritual health, I want to know when we’ve had enough to eat, I wanna know the real meaning of wealth, what’s the real meaning of wealth? Success simply means well being and it doesn’t mean anything else, No matter what you do or you’ve climbed up to your not exempt from the simple truth that will track you down, because night comes down. Oh sister moon oh brother sun, I make my way through the world without a gun and I need your love, working the top of a century, the world and its news screaming down on me with its views according to whom? Economy simply means well being, it doesn’t mean anything else We don’t need another airport, car park, bypass ring road, motorway to the sprawling estate. Why can’t we be late? That reminds me… My body loves work but my body hates stress, I think that’s the secret to true success, I wanna be immune to the target jargon and the profit margin that’s pushing us around, I’d rather wander around, that reminds me.. Every time you walk or run or swim, You make a new investment worth everything When you’re out on your bike you’ve already won and you didn’t have to race with anyone Because economy simply means well being and it doesn’t mean anything else Look after each other, watch over the kids, leave no one the shelf or behind, leave nobody behind. Oh yes! That reminds me! The gap between rich and poor gets more, in a dream of millionaires and celebs We need a revolution, a brave new world, learn to live with less, because less is more, there’s enough for us all. I’ve met the real paupers of relentless drive, riddled with envy and pride They don’t know when to stop, they buy the armament stocks, and they’ll sell you fake tickets for the first space ride, But I don’t give a care about getting up there when I’m already here and I’m fine, dancing on the stars, playing my guitar to the cat and the dog and a sock on the line. Yes, there was a sock on the line. And another thing! Like history and its emperors, we disappear, we fly into the ether, so while I‘m here, I’ll try to be good and be like Robin Hood, but make everybody rich so no one's poor anymore So no one's poor anymore. That reminds me… Socialism is a lovely word, when it doesn’t stop people's vision, Enterprise is a lovely word when it joins us in community wisdom. I love yin and yang, I love black and white, I love your gentle kiss, and when you rock me at night. I hear God when you laugh, I see God when you cry, Watching us living it and watching us die, because night comes by. That’s why… I went to see my friend by the monastery she was stringing up her runner beans Tilling at the soil, laughing at the sky, praying to the heavens while telling me why. I held in my hand this holy book and I was wondering what the whole thing means She stared into my face with a smile in her eye, she said it flows from a peace inside, because there’s treasure inside. She said ‘go!…...see your friend in the old people's home, living with the nurses alone and fading fast‘. Family too busy, we’re all too busy. I finally recognised Him just before he crashed. He said ‘when you’re old and reach the mountain top, you’ll see the love for each other is all we’ve got. Look around the world with a smile in your eye, even if your blind…..because there’s treasure inside! Economy simply means well being and it doesn’t mean anything else, Keep dancing on the stars, playing your guitar to the cat and the dog and the sock on the line! There was a sock on the line!.
