Talking Blues Logo

A new show of singing together, storytelling and comedy in the style of the Talking Blues.

What's it all about?

The talking blues was a style made famous by Woody Guthrie and later by Bob Dylan on his early recordings.  The show is a freewheeling unruly mix of comedy and storytelling, interspersed with popular singalong chorus from the last 400 years!

What's the format?

The show is flexible and available in various performance formats -from 15 mins slots to 90 mins concert.

Why the Ghost?

The ghost is a 17th century sailor who died in a shipwreck. He now spends eternity in a harbour pub influencing the patrons with silliness, satire and song.

"This new show of Pete’s is a tour de force, it is honestly a revelation, and a real joy, to see a performer at the top of his already deeply impressive game.

The premise of the show is that the friendly ghost of a sailor haunts an old pub, meeting and talking with people through the centuries, the famous and infamous, observing the changing world with a smile and a quick wit, singing popular songs from times gone by.

A happy mixture of music hall, pantomime, standup comedy, rowdy back room folk clubs, with moments of utter beauty and breathtaking audacity, it is a unique experience. It’s full of laughter, singalongs, history, poetry, philosophy and life affirming fun. It’s one of the very best things I’ve ever seen.

The audience were with him from the start, and their laughing, singing, clapping and foot stamping filled the hall. It was a mesmerising performance, a non stop cavalcade of vignettes and quips. I was left in awe of Pete’s command of the huge amount of material the show contains, just one person with a guitar and a voice, keeping the carnival vibrantly alive for us all."  PETE KENNY

The Ghost of a Sailor's talking blues is a new show of singing together, comedy and storytelling. The 17th century ghost is a shipwrecked sailor, who has remained resident in a harbour tavern to the present day, telling his tales in an unruly mix of stand up, tales and popular chorus. The show is primarily a community singalong that crosses the centuries with well known traditional ditties, music hall and modern day popular classics, with songs for all generations.

The sailors ghost winds his way back and forth through time, interacting with the audience, observing the world and history, whispering to famous characters, dancing with revellers and falling in love. The show is wrapped in the style of the talking blues -a simple guitar and spoken word technique invented by Woody Guthrie, and later made famous by Bob Dylan in his early recordings).
